This article I'm gonna talk about the process of buying UNC/Proof coin set from Indian Mint. This post will help you guys who are not aware of the process or haven't ordered previously. Let's talk about it in details.

Indian Mint publishes commemorative coins to mark a historic occasion like Birth centenary, Platinum Jubilee etc. During these occasion, a release function will take place bringing the new set to public for the first time. Generally within the six months of the ceremony, Indian Mint will publish notification about the sale. Those notification can be found in almost all the leading newspaper. Please note that there is no option for automatic notification, so you need to keep an eye on the things. Once the bookings are open you can book your product (Online/offline)

Currently 3 Indian Mints, Kolkata, Mumbai & Hyderabad, have the option to sell coins online. Let's consider we want to buy something from Kolkata-Mint as the bookings are open. Go to Kolkata Mint's official website and click on Products tab. Under Product Booking section (after you create your login using a valid ID & Address proof) you should be able to locate your product. Select the quantity you wanna buy and pay for it. Note that some credit card gateway charges (upto INR 200) will be applicable. Then your product will be on your way.

Few lucky ones who are based out of Mumbai & Kolkata, have the luxury of buying Products from Indian mint outlet. Note that few rules & regulations are applicable but definitely it's advantagious. As of now I know more about the counter in Mumbai but very little of Kolkata. If you know anything about, please post your comments.

Last important thing you should know before you place your order, what is the difference between UNC Set , PROOF Set & VIP Set. UNC Sets are uncirculated copies of commemorative coin directly out from Mint. For PROOF Sets, Mint took special care like quality checks, finish etc. to make it durable and attractive for collectors. Lastly VIP sets are with display stands or special decorative boxes for public display. I can't say which one is better because each one is designed for different purpose. But if you are a collector and plan to hold onto this piece of history, go for Proof Sets. It's bit costly though.
